Why Homeowners Can’t Repair Roof Decking

Roof decking is a layer of materials found between the structure of your roof, trusses and rafters, and the shingles. During a roof replacement or installation, these are commonly built of plywood or an oriented strand board (OSB). At times, it can be constructed of boards that are either butted together or connected with a tongue-and-groove joint.

Also called sheathing, roof decking must be stable and sturdy enough to bear the weight of the roofing shingles while being flexible enough to give slightly in high winds and under load. It is also worth noting that water is the system’s enemy. Should you find signs of damage, such as rot and mold, it is always advisable to call a roofing company to have it inspected and fixed. Here are a few of the reasons why:

  • Conducting decking repairs on your own doesn’t give you a definite assurance that it won’t get damaged or broken again. Since most roof decks are made of composite wood fibers, it is susceptible to moisture damage. Mildew may develop on the boards, leading to rot. This, in turn, weakens the support structure of the roof system.
  • Repairs, even those done by roofers and reputable contractors, are only and forever a temporary solution. Replacing the deck entirely is the better and longer-lasting answer and solution as it helps prevent further damage to the system. It also ensures that the roof materials can have a sturdier foundation. You can avoid extensive and costly projects as well.
