Your roofing system is an important – and expensive – part of your home. As such, you want it to last for as long as possible. Even if your roof is decades old, conducting regular maintenance and having repairs done as soon as it’s needed lets you get the most out of your roofing system.
Regularly Clean Your Gutters
If your siding paint is peeling, and your basement is wet, you might be dealing with clogged gutters. Clogged gutters can cause serious damage to your roofing system by causing pooling water that flows back onto your roof. This can lead to leaks and premature deterioration, which will reduce your roof’s lifespan. This is why you need to clear the debris that has accumulated in your gutters, especially during fall and spring.
Remove Leaves
If you have a peaked roofing system, then you’re in luck as leaves can clear out on their own. But if you have a sophisticated roofing system with trees near your home, leaves could pile up near your valleys and chimneys. While they can appear harmless, they actually trap moisture and can cause rot on your roof. In extreme cases, they could even provide fertile ground for organic growth. To remove the leaves, you can use tools in your home like a car washing brush, or you can invest in a roof leaf rake.
Trim Overhanging Branches
Tied in with the last point, trimming overhanging branches can do wonders to prevent leaves and moss from accumulating on your roof. Keep in mind that long branches can also damage your roof by tearing the shingles, especially in high winds. These branches also serve as bridges for pests and rodents to get to your roof.
