What You Need to Know About Rusty Gutters

Most metal gutters can last between 20 and 30 years. However, one of the biggest factors that can shorten their lifespan is rust, which forms on downspouts, end caps and other parts of your gutter system over time. Severe rusting can lead to holes and cracks, preventing water from being drained properly.

There are many reasons why rust forms on gutters, and the good news is that this issue is preventable.

Why Do Metal Gutters Rust?

The following are some of the reasons why gutters and downspouts suffer rust over time:

  • Pollen: Some types of tree pollen are acidic. When they end up in your gutters, the ensuing reaction eats away the coating off the gutter material, leaving it vulnerable to rust. To prevent this from happening, simply remove the pollen from your gutters using a garden hose from the ground. Consider trimming tree branches as well, especially if they’re already hanging above or touching the gutters.
  • Reactions with other metals: All metals are prone to different types of corrosion. Galvanic corrosion, for instance, is when two dissimilar metals come into contact through a conductor like water, causing a reaction that leads to rust. That’s why every gutter component must be made of the same material – if you choose copper gutters, be sure to get copper components and hardware.
  • Poor maintenance: Common gutter clogs include plant matter, decomposing or otherwise, like dead leaves, twigs and other wind-blown debris. With standing water present, there’s an immense chance that your gutters will rust at a much faster rate if you fail to get rid of the clogs.

What Should You Do With Rusty Gutters?

Gutter repair and maintenance with the help of a trusted local contractor can help slow down rust formation. Minor damage can be treated by using sandpaper to sand off the surface rust that is forming on the gutters.

However, if large sections of your gutters are rusted due to age or poor maintenance, your gutter contractor may recommend a long-term solution. Investing in a gutter replacement protects your foundation and roofing system from further water damage. New gutters provide years of protection and ensure a healthier home.
